Broward (Fla.) junior college wing Craig Brown remained committed to Rutgers through its brutal transition period and all it took to lock things up was a call from assistant Van Macon.
After newly hired coach Eddie Jordan publicly announced intentions to retain Macon and David Cox, Brown signed his Letter of Intent and sent it to the Louis Brown Athletic Center offices.
“He had a good talk with Van on Monday and everything is set,” said Broward coach Bob Starkman. “Really keeping Van around was big for him because they had a good relationship. He’s excited about Rutgers.”
Brown is the first player to commit to Jordan and did so by sending in his letter less than 24 hours after the formal coaching announcements. The 6-foot-5 wing committed to former coach Mike Rice late in the process and is the only one to remain committed through the coaching transition.
Brown led Broward in scoring with 20.5 points per game as a sophomore. Brown shot 49 percent over a 25 games and contributed 7.5 boards and 2.1 assists per game as well.
