Cavs knocked out by the Pack

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia fell to North Carolina State 75-56 in the second round of the 2013 ACC Tournament. First-team all-ACC selection Joe Harris finished with five turnovers and just 13 points, and the Wolfpack used seven three-pointers from senior Scott Wood to knock out the Cavs.

Virginia shot just 38.9 percent from the floor and got out-hustled, out-rebounded, and kicked out of the ACC Tournament in a 75-56 loss to North Carolina State.

First-team all-ACC selection Joe Harris finished with five turnovers and 13 points on just 4-for-13 shooting from the field and 2-for-9 from behind the arc. Akil Mitchell scored 19 to lead the way for the Cavaliers, but he was the only other player for Virginia to score in double figures.

N.C. State blew open a second half lead when senior forward Scott Wood knocked down triple three-pointers in under a minute and a half to go ahead 41-25 with 17:33. The Pack shot over 40 percent and C.J. Leslie added 17 points and 11 rebounds, while T.J. Warren finished with 18 and Richard Howell dominated the offensive glass and finished with 12 rebounds.

Virginia held the Pack to just nine fast break points, but N.C. State had 21 points come from offensive rebounds and Virginia turnovers. Virginia was out-rebounded 39-28, and the Pack doubled the Cavaliers' second chances, with a 10-5 offensive rebound ratio.

Entering today, Tony Bennett and Virginia were hoping to strengthen their case for a bid to the NCAA Tournament, but that opportunity has all but slipped away with today's loss. The Cavs had seven losses to teams outside of the RPI 100, and their non-conference schedule is not likely to impress the Tournament committee. Virginia concludes their regular season and conference tournament play with a 21-11 overall record and 11-8 ACC record. Virginia posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the early 1990's, and the Cavaliers' 11 ACC wins are the most since the 2006-2007 season. Recommended Stories
